What is it?
  • The Environmental Technology Center (ETC) is a dynamic, interactive and integrative 2,200 square foot facility where faculty, students, and community members from a wide variety of disciplines can work together in applied research training, academic study and collaborative environmental projects. As a model of sustainable building techniques and technologies, the ETC is "a building that teaches". Designed to use only 20% of the energy allowed by state energy code for similar buildings, the ETC serves as a model of public sector fiscal and environmental responsibility for California's universities and colleges. The building includes a wide range of integrative design features, including energy and water-efficient landscaping, "smart building" control technologies, environmentally-sensitive building materials, passive solar heating and cooling, advanced window systems and daylighting, solar electric technology, and digital communication systems. The ETC will open in the Fall of 2001.
  • A source of unbiased technical information and a place for a unique applied educational experience.
  • A model to the entire CSU system, providing in-house consultative services and a model of public sector environmental responsibility for California's state universities and colleges.
Who designed it?
  • A wide variety of faculty, professionals and students in the fields of energy management, sustainable architecture, ecological design, and environmental education. AIM Associates has been the architectural firm guiding the design.
Who funded it?
  • The primary funders are the National Science Foundation, the California Energy Commission, and Sonoma State University. Additional support has been provided by a variety of foundations, companies, and private individuals.
What will it do?
  • Serve as a model for other campuses by addressing campus-related environmental technologies and techniques.
  • Serve as a student and faculty center for interdisciplinary environmental science education, demonstration, research, teaching and collaboration.
  • Serve as a model pre and in-service teacher training facility with a focus on science, technology and society.
