Presidents Convening

In November 2000, Second Nature, in conjunction with several sponsoring organizations, convened thirty-two college and university presidents and provosts from around the US. This esteemed group met at the Oberlin College Center for Environmental Studies, one of the most sustainably designed buildings on any college campus. The purpose of the meeting was to develop institutional support for Education for Sustainability.

The presidents explored the importance of making EFS a major priority in their institutions and developed strategies for accomplishing these goals. The attendees agreed that EFS must be priority in higher education, and expressed their desire for further opportunities to network as was possible at this meeting. They detailed their appetite for tools for making change at their colleges, to learn about best practices and to connect EFS with other higher educational reform. From the success of this unprecedented meeting, several other organizations of presidents have begun to bring EFS into their agenda and the leadership in higher education is growing.
