Stephen Muzzy, Program Manager

Stephen brings to Second Nature a passion for education and sustainability. While pursuing a masters degree in environmental education at Antioch University New England, Stephen researched and profiled K-12 schools that were working toward sustainability. These schools demonstrated practices that reduced environmental impact through student participation and curriculum design. At Antioch, he was also part of a student led, cross-sector committee that conducted a Social Justice audit of the University. His primary responsibility was to gather data for the environmental impact assessment.

Stephen’s practicum work at Antioch led him to the Cloud Institute for Sustainability Education NY, NY, where he researched “quality of life indicators” as an alternative to the often inaccurately used GDP. His other practicum work brought him to a Nature Center on Fire Island, NY where he worked with children aged 5-12. His objective was to instill a sense of place and admiration for the natural world by facilitating learning experiences and interactions between the children and the marine ecosystem.

Stephen deepened his understanding of education for sustainability in a masters program in Sweden. His masters thesis research assessed the efforts of the Campus Sustainability Movement (CSM) in the United States and Canada relative to a Strategic Sustainable Development Framework. This research solidified his belief that education is a key leverage point in moving society toward a sustainable future. He holds a Master in Strategic Leadership towards Sustainability from Blekinge Institute of Technology Karlskrona, Sweden, a MS in Environmental Studies with a focus in Environmental Education from Antioch University New England, Keene, New Hampshire, and a BA in Marketing Communications from Western New England College, Springfield, MA.
