Kathleen Schatzberg

Dr. Kathleen Schatzberg is in her 10th year as president of Cape Cod Community College and 30th in community colleges, having served in administrative and faculty roles in New York and Minnesota. Earlier, she was a public high school teacher and a manager in market research and microfilm companies. Her Bachelor’s degree in English and Education is from the University of Nebraska, and her Master’s and Doctorate in Reading, Language and Cognition from Hofstra University in Long Island, New York.

She serves on the Cape Cod Business Round Table; the Workforce Investment Board; and the boards of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod; the  Hyannis Rotary Club; Cape Cod Community College Educational Foundation; Graduate Center of Cape Cod; and Second Nature. She is also a member of the Pastoral Council of her church and the Steering Committee of the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment. Formerly, she served on numerous other local boards and regional and national higher education associations;  the Rochester (MN) Human Rights Commission; Rochester (MN) League of Women Voters; and Rochester (MN) International Association. She was co-chair, with former Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey, of the Regional Competitiveness Council for the Cape & Islands.

During her tenure at Cape Cod Community College, both outreach to the community and fundraising have increased. She successfully led her institution to the completion of a $4M capital campaign, leading to the first new building at the College in 30 years and the first LEED-certified building constructed by the state of Massachusetts. In 2006, Cape Cod Community College was honored for its sustainability efforts with the Bellwether Award from the Community College Futures Assembly.

In her leisure time, she enjoys cooking, music, theater, traveling, walking, playing computer games, watching Star Trek and Jeopardy, and of course, reading. Besides professional publications, she reads almost anything, but especially enjoys feminist science fiction and books on spirituality. She enjoys driving trips that wander serendipitously on the old 2-lane highways, and of course, walking the beaches of Cape Cod. She lives in Centerville with a hyperactive collie-shepherd-lab mix named Ted E. Bear.
